Week 5: Senses and Stuff

The sense of taste makes eating interesting because we are able to experience a variety of both delicious foods and unpleasant foods. However, do all animals taste the same way as humans do? The article

https://toughlittlebirds.com/2014/11/25/does-food-taste-the-same-to-animals-as-it-does-to-us/

claims that all animals do indeed taste differently. Cats, for example, differ from humans in that they do not have the sweet receptor gene in their mouths, so they cannot taste sweet foods. This means a cat will think sugary water will taste exactly the same as regular tap water. Another interesting fact from this article is that carnivores generally have less taste buds than herbivores. This is because herbivores need a large amount of taste buds to distinguish differences between poisonous plants and healthy plants, but carnivores can eat almost any type of meat and not have a problem. Overall, I have learned a lot about different animals' tastes by reading this article, and I encourage you guys to check it out as well.
